There are over 10,000 species within the Rhodophyta in the oceans of the world. The red marrine macro algae available from Seatech include Dulse, porphyra, Dumontia, Giantina. Various Red Marine Algae (Rhodophyta) have been shown to have strong anti-viral properties. The primary mechanisms of action seem to involve viral replication and to function via an extra-cellular mechanism. Direct scientific evidence obtained from in vitro experiments indicates that one or more components in the algae (probably sulfated polysaccharides) block the binding of viral particles to specific sites on the outer membrane of potential target cells. Binding of viral particles to the cellular membrane sites is an essential step in viral replication and spread of the infection. In the presence of RMA, the spread are of viral particles to new cells is blocked and the infective process is essentially limited. Symptoms of viral infection minimized and recovery is accelerated. Cold sores resulting from Herpes labialis that would normally increase to form lesions 1 cm in diameter may stop at a few millimeters in the presence of RMA. Cold sores seem to disappear within 24 hours from the time of administration of RMA while untreated sores may persist for several days. The active agent present in RMA seems to be effective when either ingested or when applied topically.
There is additional evidence that suggests that some RMA may have a second mechanism for antiviral activity. A component(s) present in RMA may interfere with viral replication at an intracellular site which is yet unidentified. The result is that the infective process is inhibited. Finally, there is some preliminary evidence that RMA may demonstrate immune-modulating activity.
RMA-Standard
Single species of marine algae having strong antiviral activity. Harvested from pollution free waters of the South Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans. Free of heavy metal contaminants. Ground to less than 60 mesh. Suitable for encapsulation.
Red Marine Algae -Micronized
Micronized to <5 micron particle size to maximize availability of the active polysaccharides. Suitable for creams and lotions. Will act as a thickening agent. Distinctive reddish-brown color'
RMA-OPTIMAX
Blend of five red marine algae from the oceans of the world. All five species have been shown to have strong antiviral activity against Herpes I (Herpes labialis; and Herpes II (Herpes simplex). Some species have been tested in vitro against HIV I and II, Epstein Barr and Rubella. This blend can be customized by modifying the proportions and by Shingles-Varicella-Zoster, adding additional RMA or other algal products to enhance the antiviral properties or to add an additional immuno-modulating activity. Blend is ground to < 60 mesh and is suitable for encapsulation or blending in other delivery systems. RMA-OPTIMAX can be micronized (5 micron particle size) on a custom basis.
RMA EXTRACTS
Water soluble extracts of either RMA or RMA-OPTIMAX can be prepared on a custom basis. Extracted material is available either pre-solubilized or as dry powder. Dry powders are light tan, easily resolubilizedand can be blended with a wide variety of other agents. Material is suitable for encapsulation or incorporation into creams and lotions and other topical. The high potency extracts can be customized by blending with other extracts such as from spirulina or brown algae to enhance the immuno-modulating activity.
